Dom Ponciano is a recent brand, created in the 21st century, but Ponciano de Abreu was a pioneer in the production of Alvarinho. In the 19th century, his parents started producing wine on their property located on the slopes of Paderne, in Melgaço. The exceptional soil, climate and solar exposure conditions had repercussions on the quality of the wine, which started to gain fame in the region.   

Thus, in the first quarter of the 20th century, Ponciano de Abreu, realizing the quality of Alvarinho, decided to re-launch the cultivation of his vineyards, already framed by the legislation of the then recently created Vinho Verde Demarcated Region. Two decades ago, Rui Esteves restarted the project in a professional way, focusing on the commercialization of Alvarinho under the brand Dom Ponciano, as a tribute to his grandfather.  

The wines that Dom Ponciano produces come from 9ha of its own vineyards, between 100 and 350m of altitude, all of the Alvarinho variety, and also from grapes that the company buys from small producers of the region, monitoring all the production. The winemaking is done in its own winery, reconverted and modernised in 2009.
