Engenho Novo da Madeira is a still young company focused on the transformation of sugar cane into Agricultural Rum.
It was created in 2006 by one of the heirs of the Hinton family, owners of the largest sugarcane processing mill in Europe at the time - Fábrica do Torreão - from which he inherited the century-old column still, from which he still extracts rum today. Under the leadership of this new generation of entrepreneurs, the historical legacy of the William Hinton brand has been reborn, and Madeira Rum is today its focus. However, ENM also produces products with its own brand, such as Rum and Poncha, among others, always assuring their quality and origin.
Madeira's Agricultural Rum, distilled directly from fermented cane juice and popularly known as "Aguardente", is the main ingredient of Poncha, a cocktail that is 'endemic' to the island of Madeira.
Poncha is among the most traditional drinks in Madeira. It is based on Madeira Rum, sugar, lemon, and honey. The traditional Poncha, or 'fisherman's style was used by fishermen from Câmara de Lobos to 'warm themselves in the cold nights in high sea'. Today there are several versions: passion-fruit passion fruit, orange, mint, tangerine, among others.
