Louriana XO (extra-old) is a wine based brandy produced in the Demarcated Region of Lourinhã, the only Demarcated Region in Portugal and one of only three in Europe, exclusively made from wine based brandy.
Origin of the Louriana brand: According to records, the name Lourinhã is related to a Roman village called Laurinianum, Laurinius or Louriana, which in turn comes from Laurus or Laurius, which in Latin origin means Loureiro, a very abundant tree in the Lourinhã region. .
With the scientific support of the National Wine Station based in Dois Portos, the superior quality of the Lourinhã brandy was tested and confirmed, which is only paralleled at European level by the French brandies from the regions of Cognac and Armagnac.
In 1992, its quality was recognized, with the publication of legislation that created the respective Demarcated Region and the Controlled Denomination of Origin (DOC).
The XO classification requires a minimum of five years of aging, but Louriana rests for 12 years in French and Portuguese oak casks.
Louriana is also prepared under a rigorous method, distilled from wines, from the Alicante and Seminario varieties, carefully selected and low in alcohol content, right after the alcoholic fermentation is finished, without the addition of sulfur dioxide or any other chemical. The distillation is obtained in a copper column in 18 (Armagnac type).
