Wine Indigenus is an innovative winemaking project that originated in Terras de Mogadouro, a name that is perfect for the first wine born there.
The vineyards are part of the demarcated region of Trás-os-Montes, sub-region of Planalto Mirandês, where the history of vine planting and wine production, although forgotten in time, has a centuries-old origin dating back to Roman and pre-Roman times.
The pioneer of this project is Cristiano Pires who, with the encouragement of his father Manuel Pires, leveraged this family project. Rute Gonçalves also joined the project, who, although born in Lisbon, has her family roots in Mogadouro. Initially a nurse by profession, in the United Kingdom, now a trained oenologist on the project, she heads oenology, guided by the consultancy of the experienced oenologist Francisco Gonçalves.
It was the connection of these two young people to their origins that drove their desire to reproduce the essence of the land in their wines, through the planting of a diversity of indigenous castes, and also foreign ones, which today make up the 50ha of vines that produce the Terras de Mogadouro wines.
The grape varieties have shown perfect adaptation to the 800 metres altitude, the granite soils with schist zones and the unique mesoclimate, typical of the sub-region. This climate has great thermal amplitudes, with almost zero rainfall during the active phase of the vegetative cycle of the vine, which inhibits the appearance of cryptogamic diseases and therefore allows viticulture that is practically fully biological.
These factors, together with the technology and equipment available to the winery, have enabled the production of differentiated and modern wines, structured and complex but elegant. Wines with marked authenticity and longevity: 'pure Transmontano wines'!
