Poncha is a typical Madeiran drink, which appeared in Madeira Island in the middle of the 18th century by the English. During the whole 19th century, Poncha was a drink widely consumed within the families of Madeira. Nowadays, the tradition of Poncha is still very much alive among the people of Madeira and the instruments used as an aid to the preparation of these drinks have not changed much in its essence.
